Got Issues?

Author: Rev. Kahlil Carmichael

How many times have we heard someone write another brother or sister off with the statement, “He/she’s got issues.”  Well let me let you in on a secret; we all have issues.  And if you study the bible at all it won’t be long before you see that just about everybody in it has issues as well.  The famous men of the bible, David, the Apostle Paul, Abraham, Solomon etc., The women as well, Rachel, Sarah, and even sweet Martha.  They all had issues.  The bible says in Proverbs 4: 23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”  How do we deal with the issues that we have?  Those things that hinder and impede our walk with Christ?  We must first begin with examining our heart, and making sure that what we find there is purity, love, peace, as well as brokeness and being contrite when necessary.

If we allow Him to, God will use our issues to bring us back to Him, since we are by no means able to fix our selves and deal with our stuff on our own.  The problem arises when we will not even look at or make a true assessment of our issues and we continue on with life making excuses, and refuse to humble ourselves.  As I recently shared in a sermon, this shows up as pride.

If there is something you have repeatedly tried dealing with on your own and you don’t see it going anywhere I encourage you to get honest and get before God.  Don’t wait.  Do it now.  If pride is your particular issue, acknowledge it, confess it as a sin that is keeping you out of God’s will (because it most definitely is) and seek out God and His word and let it work on you.  One of my favorite prayers from Psalm 51:10 is when King David petitioned God, “Create in me a clean heart Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me”.  Let God work on your heart and watch the issues of your life dissolve one by one.
